Luckily, so far I haven't been tested by any Nazis or similar.

I have been tested one or two other significant (to me and my family) things in my life and I did the right thing, at great personal cost to me.

This is not one of the significant things, but I'm reminded of when my son stood up to some bullies in grade school for his best friend. Then the whole pack turned on my son and the best friend did not help my son. I remember talking about it to the mom of the best friend (not accusing or telling on him, just relating what happened) and the mom said..."too bad (son) couldn't help your boy, but he's a small guy and he's afraid of them. Your son is big." Thing is, the incident wasn't even physical. To be honest, I was shocked and that might have been the first time I realized that not all families would risk their livelihoods, social status or anything to help another human being. I don't get that.
